Welcome to Mechanical Engineering Department,

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 2004 with intake of 60 students and today in 2015, we have intake of 360 students per year. Add to it we have Post graduate course with specialization in Design engineering. This gradual expansion took place in last decade mainly due to demand of qualified and competent mechanical engineers. We as a biggest department in Sinhgad Institutes, so far succeeded to bear this responsibility with national patents, numerous ongoing research projects, national and international publications and educational tie up with multinational industries and institutes.

The department has focused on developing innovative learning environment so as to create future engineers who are ready for the employment, entrepreneurship, life-long learning and citizen of India. Our learning environment can be divided in three parts. Academic activities mainly include curricular teaching-learning, various co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities. We believe that engineering education must be integrated with excellent teaching- learning practices, state of art infrastructure and most importantly pool of qualified teaching staff. Our teaching learning practices are blend of traditional lectures, aligned with active learning and Project Based Learning principles. The motto is learning should be enjoyable and relevant to the need of stakeholders.

To support our vision and mission (listed below), we made remarkable investment in the infrastructure and facilities. We have well equipped laboratories in three important streams of mechanical engineering viz. Thermal, Design, and Production. Our central workshop is biggest in the STES family in terms of machinery and equipments.  In terms of faculty, we are biggest department in SIT, Lonavala. The teaching staffs have been selected thoughtfully, having the blend of experience and youth.  We have highly qualified and experienced teaching staff members with two awarded PhD, five registered PhDs with diverse research areas and rest are post-graduated in different fields of mechanical such as Design engineering, Thermal, Heat Power, Production, Automobile, CAD/CAM etc.

Apart from academic rigour, Department has earned its name for arranging many events co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Our main co-curricular activities include Value Addition Programmes, Lab Innovation Scheme, Invited Talks and Students Training programme (STP). Additional curricular activities include Annual National Conferences, Workshops, Seminars and Technical festival named as ‘Techtonic’. All these activities are framed to add value to the students and aim at imparting professional skills to improve their employability skills. We promote industry projects; arrange Industrial visits, and talks from industry experts. These activities give much needed industry exposure to our students.

To interact with Professionals, Department has formed ISHRAE, MESA, SAE, Aero Club, Go - Carting and Robo Club; which provide a platform to impart specified knowledge to students in the field of refrigeration, air-conditioning, automobile, design and CAD/CAM engineering. These clubs are managed by the students’ bodies and guided by the faculty coordinator. We have semi-annual sports event called as ‘Shourya’ and Annual cultural event called as ‘Surabhi’. We have been acknowledged at National level by the technical events, such as BAJA, ROBOCAON and Go-CART. Our student represented us in National boxing team, University table tennis team, appointed as student brand ambassador for European Commission for youth, and student brand ambassador for Microsoft. Our students filed patents based on their research work. All these efforts are also reflected by campus placement of students from core Mechanical companies like THERMAX, CROMPTON GREAVES, MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA, ATLAS COPCO, TATA TECHNOLOGIES, CUMMINS etc. and also in IT major like WIPRO, INFOSYS AND CAPGEMINI,ACCENTURE etc.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims at capturing the innovative capabilities of the students through a dynamic learning environment and promotes applied research to cater the professional requirements of core industry and develop entrepreneurship attitude amongst students.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

I. Preparation

To provide opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge of basic mathematical, professional and technical fundamentals, so as to prepare students to succeed in technical profession at global level and to enable them to excel in further education.

II. Core competence:

To develop an ability among students to innovate, communicate, analyze, interpret and apply technical concepts to solve real life problems and to create novel products.

III. Breadth:

To aware and achieve scientific and engineering breadth amongst student through various professional and technical activities.

IV. Professionalism:

To inculcate professional and ethical attitude in students, enable them to excel in engineering profession.

V. Learning Environment:

To accomplish overall development of the students; with the aid of project based learning environment.

Programme Outcomes

The parameters adopted by NBA for accreditation of programmes are based on initial capabilities, competence, skills, etc. keeping in mind the outcomes desired by the profession concerned. These parameters are called Graduates Attributes and they vary from discipline to discipline and level to level. As an illustration, following are the Graduate Attributes for UG Mechanical Engineering Programme.

a) The Graduates will demonstrate basic knowledge in mathematics, science and engineering.

b) The Graduates will demonstrate the ability to design and conduct experiments, interpret and analyze data, and report results.

c) The Graduates will demonstrate the ability to design a mechanical system or a thermal system or a process that meets desired specifications and stakeholder requirements.

d) The Graduates will demonstrate the ability to function effectively in disciplinary or multidisciplinary teams.

e) The Graduates will demonstrate the ability to identify, formulate and solve mechanical engineering problems.

f) The Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities.

g) The Graduates will be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.

h) The Graduates will have the confidence to apply engineering solutions in global and societal contexts.

i) The Graduates should be capable of self-learning and clearly understand the value of lifelong learning.

j) The Graduates will have an understanding of the impact of engineering decisions on society and environment

k) The Graduates will be familiar with modern engineering drafting, Modelling and analysis, presentation tools and equipment to solve mechanical engineering problems.

l)  The graduates will be able to draw and interpret engineering drawing.
